About the Mary H. Lewis Food Pantry

Healthy eating is the most important thing you can do if you live with HIV. That is why NFAN created the Mary H. Lewis Food Pantry, which is open to anyone living with HIV, no matter where they get other services in Northeast Florida.

1990 Mary H. Lewis volunteered at NFAN and started the food pantry. Mary contacted grocery stores and restaurants and collected every food she could. She organized the pantry and set the way HIV+ individuals could receive food. At that time, the available HIV medications had strict instructions about taking medication so many hours before, after, or with food. The medicines also sometimes had harsh side effects, like vomiting and diarrhea. With these obstacles, having food on hand was even more critical.

Fast-forward to today, with the increasing cost at grocery stores and Duval County being at the highest in the state at 20.1%*, the Mary H. Lewis Food Pantry is in demand more than ever.

Through the help of the Dining Out For Life® Jacksonville FL event, NFAN can ensure the pantry available to assist the Northeast Florida HIV Community.
